This is a new recipe to Common Threads, and we are excited for you to try it with us. Suitable for ages 5+.

Join our interactive cooking classes, led by our 2019-2020 Food Educator team, right from your home!

On Friday, June 10th, Ms. Indigo, AmeriCorps Food Educator at Cascadia Elementary, will be teaching you how to prepare super yummy Quick Pickles. Through Zoom, your kid(s) will be able to follow along, ask questions, eat something delicious, and have fun!

Recipe: Quick Pickles

This recipe: 

• Requires knife use

• Requires a heat source (stovetop or electric skillet)

• Is Vegan

• Is Gluten-Free

Common Threads Recipes never use peanuts, shellfish, fish, and other meat. We will always flag if our recipe contains any common allergens (milk, eggs, tree nuts, wheat, soy, sesame, etc.) If you cannot eat an ingredient, we will gladly work with you to come up with alternatives. 

Ingredients you will need:

Pickling Liquid

• 2 Cups vinegar- white, red wine, rice wine, apple cider (any of these, or a combination)

• 2 Cups water

• 2 Tablespoons kosher salt

• 4–6 Tablespoons sugar (sugar is added for flavor, so feel free to cut back you like)

Pickles

• Enough Fresh Raw Veggies to fill 2 quart size mason Jars (approximately 5-6 cups)

  • beets, carrots, radishes, turnips, cucumbers, green beans, asparagus, onion, zucchini or summer squash, cauliflower florets, bell peppers, cabbage

• 5 cloves garlic (or more if you like garlicky pickles!) cut into thick slices

• Other optional additions:

  • Fresh ginger slices

  • Fresh chilies or chili flakes 

  • Whole peppercorns

  • Fresh dill or dill seeds

Materials you will need:

• Medium saucepan

• Funnel

• 2 quart sized mason jars with lids (or other airtight GLASS container)

• Wooden spoon

• Cutting board

• Knife

• Measuring cups and spoons

• A computer or phone, to join the zoom class!

Prep Ahead:

Have all your ingredients and materials on the counter (we will go over tool safety before chopping). The zoom class invitation will be included in the registration email. 

Cost: $20, $10, or $0

• Ticket pricing: Our goal is to make these classes both accessible and sustainable. For this reason we encourage you all to pay what you can by selecting the ticket price that you can afford at this time. There will be multiple prices for you to choose from as well as an option to donate if you would like to help offset the cost for other families to attend. 

• Account creation: Consider creating an account with a login and password to make the registration process easier in the future - this option is on the registration page.

• Waitlist: If a class is full, you will be given the option to be added to the waitlist. If a space opens up, we will notify you and collect payment at that time to secure your space. 

Registration closes an hour before the event. We will open more classes up as we go, so check back in to our website for future dates and recipes!
